I (Maggs Dao from California, USA) have been connected to 15-year-old Hussein Al-Zaq and his sister, 20-year-old Tasneem Al-Zaq, since June 2024. Hussein and Tasneem are from Gaza City, and are currently living in a tent in a displacement camp in Deir al-Balah. They are supporting the survival of their family of 10, the youngest of whom is only 10 months old.

Hussein and Tasneem are frequently providing care to their neighbors in their camp. Tasneem and 3 of her friends have founded a mutual aid group called Plant a Smile, which I am also managing a separate fundraiser for.

This campaign is raising funds for the personal ongoing survival needs of Hussein, Tasneem and their family. Funds will be used to purchase food, tent supplies, and other necessities. Donations will be deposited to my bank account and then wire transferred to Hussein’s Bank of Palestine account.

In his words:

“I am Hussein from Palestine, from Gaza. I was moved to the city of Deir al-Balah under the force of the occupation. I lost many family members in this war, our house was bombed and our entire region was bulldozed.”

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to helping me send $2650 to the Al-Zaq family yesterday in order to support their ongoing survival through manufactured Stage 5 famine. Last week, Tasneem informed me that her brother Yahya was shot and injured by the Israeli occupation and is in need of additional support for his recovery. Please continue to share and support this family’s life-sustaining campaign.

From the river to the sea

Thank you so much for your support of Hussein, Tasneem and their family. Since the temporary ceasefire in February, the Al-Zaq family has been living in the ruins of their old neighborhood in Gaza City. Western Union is no longer accessible in Gaza, but I have fortunately been able to continue transferring donations to Hussein via international wire transfer. Thank you for contributing to this family’s survival of the ongoing genocide.

Tasneem’s Plant a Smile community aid project is, unfortunately, no longer operating, due to relocation and the unstable conditions. I am now only collecting funds to support Tasneem and her family via this campaign.

The situation in Gaza remains extremely difficult, and Hussein has told me that he and his family are now hoping to evacuate from Gaza. Please give to and/or help amplify this campaign so that the Al-Zaq family can reach their new goal.
